When The Witches Of Eastwick Goes To Hollywood

In the shade of a big house and shade trees, Sally and Gillian Owens grew up as pretty, attractive, friendly girls but different from the others. Since the death of their parents, they were raised by their aunts, Jet (Dianne Wiest) and Frances (Stockard Channing), who has magical powers.

So Sally grows up unlike other children, living without rules: having breakfast with chocolate cake, sleeping at irregular hours, and learn spells from her aunt magic books who wanted to give inherited the strength to their beautiful niece. However, with magical powers that they have, they also have a terrible curse: All men who loved them will die.

Sally, in adulthood (well played by Sandra Bullock) determined to raise her children in normal and conventional way. She was unwilling to use her magic power because she wanted to live like other normal families, although Sally must realize that no matter how different she and her family is, people still isolated them because of the difference.

Until one day when Gillian's, Sally sister - grown (well played by Nicole Kidman) involved a disaster, everything changes in different way. Sally enjoys using her magic power to subdue man. Her possessive boyfriend, accidentally, was killed by her magic potion. So because of that the two beautiful young witches was being chased by detective Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn).

So what they have to do??? Directed by Griffin Dunne (who survived the romantic comedy Addicted to Love) tries to play with another world outside the corporeal; a story of human special abilities, beyond the area of logic, which is mixed to be a smart comedy.

Movies that involved magic, from the serious movie such as The Crucible, a player of Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Riders-up film or television series Bewitched movie "The Witches of Eastwick by George Miller, which is based on John Updike's novel that highlight the life of witches in modern age with humor.

However, it must be admitted, so far The Witches of Eastwick film, which featured Jack Nicholson wizard against amateur magicians Susan Sarandon, Cher and Michelle Pfeiffer trio, more successful to shows witch lives among ordinary people with a poetic, and brilliant witty dialogue presented by Jack Nicholson. The witches in this film, considered as part on ordinary and normal human life.

Practical Magic movie instead shows how different life and the nature of the witches with ordinary human life, so it shows clear demarcation line that the witch is strange and terrifying and ordinary human are always be a hero and always right.

Griffin Dunne tries to overturn the thesis, that the magician was good things that have a conscience. Even in the event of “accidental killings”, the two sisters were considered not guilty of the murder because of self-defense reason from wicked man attack.

If The Witches of Eastwick movie end the film with an open end, Practical Magic, of course, fulfill its duties as a complete film with a Hollywood concoction. Using popular actress like Sandra Bullock that end the conflict well because people finally can understand the village life of the good witches, evil spirits can be evicted and most important event is they (the couple who fall in love) can live happily ever after.

Of course life was never so easy and simple. But since when did Hollywood present a real life in their movie???
